WHY DO I HAVE FRUIT FLIES & HOW CAN I GET RID OF THEM?
This is one of the most asked questions in the foodservice industry. Your reputation is at stake when customers are bothered by these pests. Fruit flies imply that the environment is unkempt and is a breeding ground for insects. Moreso, removing these flies can be an ongoing challenge with because of the nature of the business.
Fruit flies are common in restaurants where there is an ample amount of ripened fruits and vegetables. They will breed in drains, garbage disposals, empty bottles and cans, trash containers, mops and cleaning rags. All that is needed for development is a moist film of fermenting material. Infestations can originate from over-ripened fruits or vegetables that were previously infested.
One way to avoid problems with fruit flies is to eliminate sources of attraction. Produce which has ripened should be eaten, discarded or refrigerated. Cracked or damaged portions of fruits and vegetables should be cut away and discarded in the event that eggs or larvae are present in the wounded area. Single pieces of fruit skins dropped on the floor and left are subject to a breeding ground. A daily perimeter sweep in all areas where fruit is (bar, kitchen, prep areas) can help eradicate this issue.
Your most effective course of action is to incorporate Biologix® Drain Protection Plan in your preventative measure. Included in this plan is the identification and resolve of individual facility needs, including specific microbes that are concocted to combat fruit fly infestation.
